Bottom Line: Prayer is participation in a battle I cannot see.

Daniel 10:1-7 NLT

In the third year of the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar) had another vision. He understood that the vision concerned events certain to happen in the future—times of war and great hardship.When this vision came to me, I, Daniel, had been in mourning for three whole weeks.All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.On April 23, as I was standing on the bank of the great Tigris RiverI looked up and saw a man dressed in linen clothing, with a belt of pure gold around his waist.His body looked like a precious gem. His face flashed like lightning, and his eyes flamed like torches. His arms and feet shone like polished bronze, and his voice roared like a vast multitude of people.Only I, Daniel, saw this vision. The men with me saw nothing, but they were suddenly terrified and ran away to hide.

1. Prayer engages the unseen world.

Daniel 10:8-14 NLT

So I was left there all alone to see this amazing vision. My strength left me, my face grew deathly pale, and I felt very weak.Then I heard the man speak, and when I heard the sound of his voice, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground.Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees.And the man said to me, “Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling.Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia.Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.”

2. Real prayer requires persistence.

Daniel 10:12 NLT

Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.

3. God responds from the moment I pray.

Luke 18:1 NLT

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT

Never stop praying.

Ephesians 6:18 NLT

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Romans 8:26-27 NLT

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

4. Just keep praying.

James 5:16 NLT

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

START TALKING:

When have you doubted the response of someone or something and didn't think they would pull through, only to find out the response began as soon as you asked for help, you just didn't see it yet?

At your youngest ages or earliest stages of faith, how were you taught to pray? How was it different or similar to what the scriptures teach or what we learned together in this sermon?

START THINKING:

Read Daniel 10:1-4.

Why do you think Daniel gives us so many factual details at the beginning of this passage? And why do you think this is so important considering the unusually supernatural story he is about to tell next?

Read Daniel 10:7.

What do you think is the significance for us, especially in the context of this series, that Daniel could see this vision but the other people around him couldn't see it? And along with that, they couldn't see it but yet still felt the effects of it?!

START SHARING:

Read Daniel 10:11.

There are three parts to this first response that finally comes to Daniel. You are precious to God; listen to what He wants to tell you; and confirmation of his prayers being heard and answered. When have you experienced each of these in response to something you prayed for? How did you feel, hear, or see:

1. God cares about me deeply.
2. I can listen and hear Him.
3. My prayers are heard and answered.

Read Daniel 10:12-14.

Daniel prayed for understanding in verse 12 and in verse 14 he begins to receive the explanation he prayed for. When have you understood God's purpose or plan for something after the fact, but in the moment you didn't understand? How was your faith tested in that moment? What was the battle that you couldn't see in the waiting, but now you can see what was going on behind the scenes?

START DOING:

Read Luke 18:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18, Romans 8:26-27, and James 5:16. Make a list of what you see God's Word telling us to do when it comes to prayer.

Now take the list you made and go around the micro church for each person to share how you will put at least one of those into practice this week.

When you think about your "one" and asking God to use you to lead them to experiencing Jesus, how can you practice that list you made above? What can you anticipate will happen because you are praying for their faith, and because your faith is involved, since we know spiritual warfare is ultimately a battle for that very thing - our faith?

START PRAYING:

Pray for what each person just shared about their "one", that person's faith, and their own faith. Pray that each of us would remain persistent in our prayers, trusting that God responds the moment we pray - even if we can't see it. Pray that each of us would engage in the unseen battle by bringing our "prayers and requests" to God, listening to and for his response, and trusting that He is fighting for us.
