START TALKING:
When has someone done something for you that in the moment wasn't about that specific thing but about something bigger and more long term? (e.g. a project that was due, a parent cooking a meal, etc.)
When have you done something for someone in the moment that was motivated more by what you wanted for them long term than it was by what you did for them in the moment?
START THINKING:
Read Mark 4:35-41.
How does the story start with the disciples being obedient? What does this mean about the relationship between obedience and fear? Is there one? How is this different from a conventional, elementary understanding of Christianity?
Why do you think Mark includes the detail about Jesus sleeping "on a cushion" in the midst of this storm?
When Jesus wakes up and calms the storm, He connects faith to fear. What is that connection?
Why are they more afraid of Jesus at the end of the story than they seemed to be even of the storm? What does this seem to tell us about how well they know Jesus at this point of the story?
START SHARING:
In this story, we see that the disciples' obedience is what led them straight into a situation that caused fear. When have you done exactly what God wanted you to do only to find yourself in a situation that you couldn't control? How did you experience what the disciples experienced in this story?
Because the disciples don't yet fully know Jesus, their fear causes them to question His character; they assume he doesn't care about them because they were going through the storm and were "about to die." If we're honest, we have all been there before. When have you experienced that? How did that (or how should it in the future) give you evidence that you needed to get to know Jesus better rather than panicking at the storm?
Once the disciples saw Jesus calm the "seismos" of this storm, they undoubtedly would remember this the next time something terrifying came up. It served to calm their soul more than calm this one storm. How have you experienced this? When have you seen Jesus bring peace into a situation that was so remarkable that it helped you through the next storm that you faced?
Read Hebrews 13:5 and 1 Peter 4:12.
How do these verses go hand in hand? How can this help you as you face situations and circumstances that seem terrifying?
START DOING:
What is a situation you have faced recently, are facing right now, or anticipate will come soon that could lead you to magnify the storm and minimize the Savior? What can you do to keep the priority and focus on Jesus and not the storm?
You are surrounded every day be people who can only see their storms and don't see a Savior. How can the storms you face and the calm that Jesus gives to your soul impact the story that you have to tell those people in your life?
Who is your one that you are still being intentional with, building trust, praying for, and inviting to come experience Jesus?
START PRAYING:
Pray for the storms that each person shared that they face. Pray that more than having the storm calmed, each of us will experience the calm that Jesus wants to bring to our souls. Pray that we will each take this experience and make it part of the story - our testimony - that we share with our "one" and all of the people in our lives who need to know Jesus, too.

Bottom Line: Jesus doesn't only want to calm my storm. He wants to calm my soul.
Mark 4:35-37 NLT
As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.
1. Fear is not a sign that I am out of God's will.
Mark 4:38 NLT
Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
2. Fear grows when I magnify the storm and minimize the Savior.

3. Unhealthy fear causes me to question God's character.
Mark 4:39-40 NLT
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
4. Lesser faith leads to greater fear.

The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
