START TALKING:
What is a time in your life or a story from your life when you felt like more "toys" would make you happier? When did you feel the pressure of comparison or the belief that having more or better things would help you fit in or accomplish something?
START THINKING:
Read Luke 12:13-21.
How much does the rich man talk about himself versus how much does he talk about God? What is the significance of this for us and the warning about what materialism can lead us to do?
The word "fool" in the Greek means "one without sense, understanding, or spiritual perception." How did this man gain everything the world says matters but lose everything that really matters in the process?
START SHARING:
If what I worship can be defined by the answer to the question, "What makes me ok?" when have you found yourself worshipping material things over Jesus? What lie did you believe when your worship was on something else?
When have you become successful in some way according to the worldview of materialism but still felt - or ended up feeling - empty?
Read Matthew 6:21. When have you experienced this principle in your life in both directions - when your heart was following worldly treasure and when your heart was following Kingdom treasure?
Now read that entire passage before that verse - Matthew 6:19-21. What is Jesus teaching? When have you followed this teaching and what was the result for you spiritually? What sacrifice did you have to make?
START DOING:
Share one thing you can do this week in each of the following areas to develop a "Belonging Over Belongings" worldview.
1. Practice gratitude over consumption
2. Hold everything with open hands.
3. Practice intentional generosity.
4. Invest in something eternal.
How would developing the Christian worldview of possessions and taking the steps above impact your "one" person that you are investing in and inviting to experience Jesus? How would this be different that what those people in your life where you live, work, and play usually see and experience with other people?
How can you tell your faith story/testimony as it relates to this principle? Practice it by finishing each of the following sentences with phrases related to how you saw and now see possessions and how you handled and now handle stuff and possessions:
- Before following Jesus, I was _____________ or I saw my possessions as ________________.
- I began following Jesus and learned __________________ about stuff and possessions.
- Since following Jesus, I now want to/try to __________________ and see my possessions as __________________.
START PRAYING:
Pray for each person in the micro church to take the four steps they shared in the "start doing" section. Pray for each person to have an opportunity to share their faith story/testimony as it relates to this principle to their "one". Pray that each of us experience the Gospel first hand as we fully surrender our lives to Jesus, including in the area of stuff, money, possessions, and wealth.

MULTIPLICATION
Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
- Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
- What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
- How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
- How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
- Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?
- Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?

The Lie: The one with the most toys wins.
The Truth: When possessions become my purpose, possessions become my prison.
The Truth: When possessions become my purpose, possessions become my prison.
Luke 12:13-15 NLT
Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.”Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”
1. Materialism competes for my worship every day.
Luke 12:16-19 NLT
Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’
Luke 12:20 NLT
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
2. Materialism can make me successful and still leave me empty.
Luke 12:20 NLT
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
3. Materialism makes for a terrible savior.
Luke 12:21 NLT
“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
4. Materialism forgets what lasts forever.
The Christian Worldview Alternative: Belonging over belongings.
Romans 14:8 NLT
If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
1. Practice gratitude instead of consumption.
2. Hold everything with open hands.
3. Practice intentional generosity.
4. Invest in something eternal.
