Bottom Line: Jesus is enough when the progress seems slow.

Zechariah 4:9-10
“Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has sent me.Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the LORD that search all around the world.)

Ezra 3:11-13
With praise and thanks, they sang this song to the LORD: “He is so good! His faithful love for Israel endures forever!” Then all the people gave a great shout, praising the LORD because the foundation of the LORD’s Temple had been laid. But many of the older priests, Levites, and other leaders who had seen the first Temple wept aloud when they saw the new Temple’s foundation. The others, however, were shouting for joy.The joyful shouting and weeping mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the distance.

Criticism from the inside threatens progress.

Ezra 4:1-5
The enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were rebuilding a Temple to the LORD, the God of Israel. So they approached Zerubbabel and the other leaders and said, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God just as you do. We have sacrificed to him ever since King Esarhaddon of Assyria brought us here.”But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel replied, “You may have no part in this work. We alone will build the Temple for the LORD, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.”Then the local residents tried to discourage and frighten the people of Judah to keep them from their work. They bribed agents to work against them and to frustrate their plans. This went on during the entire reign of King Cyrus of Persia and lasted until King Darius of Persia took the throne.

Attack from the outside threatens progress.

God measures progress differently.

Progress is for God's glory not mine.

START TALKING
When have you had a project or situation that took so much longer than you expected, to the point that you didn't know if it would even get completed or work out in the end?

When have you experienced something like the above, but what you didn't know is that the work had begun, the foundation had been laid, and there was more progress than you realized? Or maybe the progress of just getting started was far more significant than you realized?

START THINKING
Read Zechariah 4:9. What does it likely mean about how Zerubbabel is feeling that God had to tell him to not despise small beginnings?

How is our culture similar to what Zerubbabel was likely facing, in that small beginnings are criticized and attacked?

START SHARING
When have you experienced or seen criticism from the inside when small spiritual progress was made, but it didn't seem big enough to be celebrated?

What have you experienced or seen attack come from the outside when God began to move in some way?

START DOING
What do you sense the Spirit telling you to do as a result of this sermon and conversation? What are you going to do about it?

What are the small beginnings He wants you to celebrate? How can that become part of your story that you share with others where you live, work, and play?

START PRAYING
Pray for each other to rejoice to see the work begin just as the Lord does. Pray for each other to remain encouraged, even when criticism comes from the inside and attack comes from the outside.

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
  - Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  - What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
