Bottom Line: Jesus is enough, so I don’t have to be.

Philippians 3:1-6 NLT

1 Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith. 2 Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. 3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! 5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault.

1. My effort will never be enough.

Philippians 3:7-9 NLT

7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

2. Faith in Jesus is worth more than anything I can offer.

Philippians 3:10-14 NLT

10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! 12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

3. The race isn’t easy, but the prize is worth it.

START TALKING
When have you ever felt like “I’m not enough” or “I can’t do it” or “I’m not qualified for this” and someone stepped in to help? How did that relief feel?

START THINKING
Read Philippians 3:1-6.
Paul talks about his pedigree, and how of all people he could “be enough” - and in that time he was probably not wrong! But in verse 3, what does he tell us we should rely on? What should we not rely on? Why do you think that is?

Read Romans 3:23. Why is “my effort” never going to be enough?

START SHARING
Read Philippians 3:7.
How have you experienced (ultimately) that your effort to try to be good enough was actually worthless? Share some personal examples!

Read Philippians 3:8.
What’s the difference in knowing a lot ABOUT Jesus versus (as the verse says) “knowing Christ Jesus my Lord?” How have you experienced the difference yourself?

Read Philippians 3:9.
What does faith in Jesus look like for you, and why is it so much more valuable than anything else?

START DOING
Read Philippians 3:10-14.
What will you do this week that - even though it may not be easy - it’ll help you draw closer to Jesus?

How will you help others to “forget the past” and experience for themselves that they don’t have to be good enough, because Jesus is!? How will you use your own story?

START PRAYING
Pray that God helps each person in your Micro Church to lay themselves aside. Pray that God strengthens each person’s faith! Pray that as each person experiences Jesus, they will stop trying to be enough on their own. And pray for the opportunity to share that with others!

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
  - Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  - What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
