Titus 1:2 NIV
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,

Proverbs 10:28 ESV
28 The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.

Hope:
Confident expectation.

Luke 24:1 NIV
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

Luke 24:9-11 NIV
When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

John 20:19 NIV
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

1. Hope is lost when death seems to have won.

Luke 24:11-12 NLT
11 But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. 12 However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.

When life is at its worst, hope doesn’t make sense.

Luke 24:15-17 NLT
15 As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. 16 But God kept them from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?" They stopped short, sadness written across their faces.

Luke 24:30-31 NIV
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

Jesus shows up and brings hope to the hopeless.

START TALKING
When have you needed something or had something to look forward to so that you could make it through a busy or stressful or even painful time? What did you know was coming or what did you have confidence in that helped you make it through? (i.e. graduation, vacation, pregnancy, etc.)

START THINKING
Read Proverbs 10:28. How does this verse help to provide clarity that expectation and hope are synonymous?

Read Titus 1:2. What is the hope that those who follow Jesus have? Thinking back to last week's study of the word joy, how does this real hope (not just a wish or desire) bring joy no matter the circumstances?

Read Romans 4:18-22. What does this story teach us about hope, joy, and how we can be called "righteous"? What sticks out to you? What do you relate to?

START SHARING
Read Luke 24:1-11 and John 20:19. When have you felt like all hope was lost? When you had no confidence because death seemed to have won? How were you like the disciples who were hiding in fear?

Read Luke 24:11-12. Why did Peter so easily miss the obvious hope right in front of him? What is it that makes hope seem like nonsense to you in moments of loss or fear?

Read Luke 24:15-31. Jesus was with them, walking down the road in the midst of their hopelessness and unbelief. But finally Jesus revealed himself that he had been there all along. When have you experienced this? When have you had a realization that Jesus had been with you all along even though you had lost hope?

START DOING
What do you need to have hope and a confident expectation that God is with you, He is who He says He is, and He will do what He promised? What do you need to do this week to not lose that hope?

When the women who went to the tomb had their hope restored, they ran back and told it to the hopeless, even though they knew it sounded crazy. Who in your life needs the confident expectation that Jesus offers? What is your own story of hope that you can tell them?

What do you sense the Holy Spirit is telling you or teaching you in regards to hope? What are you going to do about it?

 START PRAYING
Pray for each other regarding the answers to those last few questions. Commit to pray for each other this week, encourage each other, and hold each other accountable to take the steps that you feel like the Holy Spirit is leading you to take.

  - What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
